Calling all amateur photographers with a passion for Victoria’s spectacular coastline!

Get outdoors, get snapping and enter your photos into the Summer by the Sea 2022 photo challenge.

Your entry(ies) must showcase one of the following themes:

  • Connecting with coast
  • Creatures of the coast
  • Coastal colours

 The important details: 

  • The challenge runs from 3rd – 25th January and is open to all ages
  • Participants can enter up to three photos
  • Whilst exploring the coastline and capturing your images, please ensure not to disturb wildlife or their habitats
  • Images must be:
    • Taken within Victoria
    • JPEG format

  How to enter:

 Share with us on social media by tagging the Summer by the Sea | Facebook or Instagram (@summerbythesea_vic) and use the hashtag #SBTSphotochallenge and either #connectingwithcoast #creaturesofthecoast or #coastalcolours depending on your theme entry

Choosing the best: 

The top photos under each theme will be chosen by the Coastcare Victoria team, announced on January 28th 2022 and will feature on our website.

Sand sculpture challenge

Grab your buckets and spades and head on down to your local beach for some creative fun in the sand! The Summer by the Sea 2022 sand sculpture challenge runs from 3rd – 25th January and is open to all ages. Show us your finest sculpted mermaid tail, your favourite wild sea creature or something totally out of this world! You are not limited by categories, only by your imagination!

 The important details: 

  • Keep it natural! Sand sculptures must consist of sand only, with the exception of natural items (e.g., wood, rocks, shells, etc.) found on the beach that you might use as decorations. No need to bring decorations from home.
  • Respect the beach and creatures’ homes. Do not disturb animals or their habitat and keep out of sand dunes.
  • Children should be accompanied by an adult.
  • Enjoy the sun but don’t forget to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide!

 Choosing the best: 

The top sand sculptures will be chosen by the Coastcare Victoria team, who will be looking for:

  • WOW FACTOR – How eye catching is the design?
  • CREATIVITY – Is it unique?
  • WACKY FACTOR: How weird and wonderful is it?

The best sand sculpture will be announced on January 28th 2022 and will feature on our website.

Amateur Naturalist Challenge

Background

Are you a budding photographer or movie maker with a passion for Victoria’s stunning marine and coastal environments and its inhabitants? Now is your time to shine! Make a short movie or visual presentation and submit it to our amateur naturalist challenge.

We’re running a contest for budding presenters to share their stories about Victoria’s marine and coastal environment as part of Coastcare Victoria’s next Summer by the Sea program.

Presentations could include profiling a group that’s doing some great work, sharing a story about your local or favourite spot. Other ideas include creature features, educational pieces on local ecosystems, local project highlights, cultural or historical knowledge or conservation efforts.

Prize: Our favourite video will be showcased as part of the 2022 Summer by the Sea program and include professional production editing, closed captions, transcripts and translations in multiple languages.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Content duration: maximum 5 minutes
  • Maximum file size: 2GB
  • Victorian Coastal or Marine topic
  • All content needs to be submitted to coastcare.victoria@delwp.vic.gov.au via WeTransfer by 5pm Monday 10 January 2022
  • Content submitted for contest and showcased will be hosted on Summer by the Sea website and promoted through other relevant channels during the last week of the 2022 program
  • Content should be new/not already distributed (though can use imagery you already have edited for a new presentation)
  • All people featuring in video must have given their consent to be included (parents/guardians for under 16s).
  • All content should be recorded following COVIDSafe guidelines: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-covidsafe-settings
  • Please ensure not to disturb wildlife or their habitats while filming e.g. beach nesting birds
